Tennis Elbow? But I Don't Even Play Tennis!?

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition that affects the outer part of the elbow. It occurs when the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus become inflamed or damaged. This condition is most often caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and arm, such as those used in playing tennis or other racquet sports, hence the name!

`However, it is more commonly occurring in other instances where tennis isn't even involved like computer work/mousing, weightlifting, or any repetitive action of the wrist. There has even been more evidence showing holding your elbow in a prolonged bend position can cause the bicep muscle to tighten, which can be a source of lateral elbow pain.

Symptoms of tennis elbow include pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow, as well as weakness in the forearm and wrist. These symptoms can make it difficult to perform daily activities, such as lifting objects or gripping items.

Treatment for tennis elbow typically involves rest, ice, and physical therapy exercises to help strengthen the affected area. Some people often find relief from a custom splint and /or brace that holds their wrist in a position to allow these muscles to rest and heal and avoid further aggravation of symptoms. A hand therapist is a great resource who can show specific stretches and exercises to improve your symptoms. In more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary.

Preventing tennis elbow involves using proper technique when playing racquet sports or performing repetitive motions with the arm and wrist. It's also important to use equipment that is properly sized and adjusted to your body. A Hand Therapist is trained to show you proper ergonomics to utilize at work and/or daily activities to prevent and treat this syndrome.

Overall, tennis elbow is a common condition that can be painful and disruptive to daily life. Don't let the name fool you, it can occur even if you have never played a game of tennis in your life.  However, with proper treatment and prevention strategies, it can be managed effectively.
